Hello, everyone. This is Valerie, Ella and Kitty. Tomorrow we are going to discuss the topic “culture jamming in our daily life.”
Culture jamming is based on the CB slang word “jamming” in which one disrupts existing transmission. It is usually implies an interruption, hoax or prank of what are seen as the monolithic power structures governing cultural life. It is not hard to find the example in our society, such as the consumerism, political and the capitalism. Thus the relationship between the corporate and political is blurring.
Everyone can jam the society issues. People who understand how to get its agenda into newspaper and television broadcast. Besides, they know about media industry. They know what kinds of issues are attractive and how to present it to the audience. They tend to create fun, and not aim to oppose dominant modes of power.
The followings are the case studies, Chrissie Chow and $6000 will be used as an examples. It has created some noise in our society and people have used different kinds of methods to jam the issues. For instance, television advertisement, pictures or video are the normal ways they use.
We will have more details analysis in our presentation tomorrow.
These are the discussion questions:
1. Do you think the culture jamming affect our daily life?
2. Will you jam? Why prank?
Thank you for your attention.
Let’s discuss more about the questions tomorrow.
Culture jamming is all around our daily life. By the internet became popular, we can easily find lots of examples about culture jamming. HKGOLDEN forum created thousand of culture jamming products which aim to dig at the current social issues. People tend to use this way to release their dissatisfaction, and upload to the internet in order to seek for resonance. I think that the production of those culture jamming products are based on the maker's inherent thoughts. In fact, that inherent thoughts are normally came from stereostyped norms. So all products should be included some ideas which is reinforcing something such as the unfairness of gender. Although culture jamming does not have strong influence of our daily life, it will strengthen our belief when we are resonated with them.
ReplyDeleteWith advancement of technology, people now easily practise culture jamming since it provides a platform for people to prank such as the videos showed during the presentation. Some people do not actually create their own culture jamming products, however, they have clicked to see the advertisement, pictures, or watch the video clips, even shared with their friends in cyberspace. Although they only act as audiences, it is no doubt that they involve in the process of culture jamming because it is their autonomies to take such actions (i.e. choose to consume those products). It can be seen as a kind of resistance.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, culture jamming actually affected our daily life in certain standard. Although some people tend to create fun rather than oppose dominant modes of power, it does raise people’s attention to the issue.
ReplyDeleteTake “Act Now” (a promotion of 2010 Constitutional Package from HK government) as an example. Many netizens have pranked “Act Now” to different kinds of phrases, like “All Wrong”, “Act Now for anti-CCP” etc. And “Act now” had become the hottest word and the issues in that moment, everyone talking about it.
So from the culture jamming, people will know more about the issue in that period, people are all discussing it. That’s why although culture jamming may only create fun for us, it actually draws people’s attention and awareness of the issue.
Culture jamming is a kind of resistance towards the capitalistic social structure.
ReplyDeleteIt does affect our daily life, for instance, there is a cultural jamming advertisement that is directly targeted at Apple's Iphone.

(The world after 30 years)
this "ad" talk about how the world becomes a "Iworld" but that is a metaphor that we so easily influence by capitalistic activities that are around us.
Cultural jamming provides us a cultural imaginary to rethink about the social structure.
Hence, it is important in our daily life, as it provide a new thinking for us to resist and question the commercialized world.

Yes, I do think culture jamming affect our daily life. Chrissie Chow and $6000 is a good example to explain this topic. Nowadays, people would like to jam some sensitive issues. It is such a good way for people to express their views under capital society. It also provide a platform for people to resist the authority. However, people would like to use culture jamming to create fun more than reflecting the social issues now. Some audiences only concentrate on the fun but not focus on the inner meaning. Moreover, it can spread rapidly on the internet.
ReplyDeleteIt is an interesting topic that culture jamming was a sub-culture,however,seems to become a popular culture nowadays. Whenever we surf the net, we will discover there are lots of culture jamming especially in the forum, facebook and other web platforms. In evidence, people who prank are mostly the minorities or the powerless groups. They either aims to release their anger, discontents or to deride the social phenomenon. For example in Hong Kong, there were people who disagreed those young lady models existing in the bookfair, had made songs or rewittten lyrics to reject their appearances. However, someone may prank only for fun like changing the poster of the movie Black Swan to Sheung Tin Ngor since the name are similar in Chinese and both of them are females.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to assure culture jamming affect our daily life since someone may ignore those things but others may be triggered by the pranksters to make defences. Nonetheless, I am sure that there will be more and more pransters and culture jamming emerge in the future.
